I posted an 'ANNOUNCE' a while back, to say that I had been granted a
large room for the Afparty and put out a call for volunteers:
[ANNOUNCE][F] Afparty at DWCon 2006
<20060612-000333-afpa [at] hex.athame.co.uk>
In 2002 a similar announcement ended up with almost every afper, new
and old who was attending the Con coming and being involved. They
enjoyed/had enjoyed afp the group and also were willing get involved...
In 2004 again volunteers included people offering to make hedgehog
cakes and co-ordinate others doing balloons and bringing games - new
people willing to help alongside the middles and the oldies even with
the tedious clearing up.
2006 - I have precisely three responses, two are already heavily
volunteering elsewhere but are willing to help with clear up etc, the
third is also already volunteered elsewhere as a gopher and would need
more assistance. Also Orjan had previously expressed his willingness to
help out a bit, despite organising quite a bit of programme content
himself already.
Possibly I could round up some of the ex-afpers and old lags to help -
its that big stick I carry - they never run fast enough :^) But:
a) these are precisely the people already helping elsewhere
b) I cannot co ordinate it myself - I have clashing tasks
c) It must have one or two people willing to take some 'ownership' and
others to help them - many hands make light work in this situation
d) I cannot keep hold of a room when other groups are seeking similar
accommodation.
e) This is a big meet - meets are put on by afpers for afpers with
everyone getting involved. To make it just a programme-item-inna-bun
defeats the object of the exercise.
Oldlags and ex-afpers will get together somewhere anyway - but the point
is that doing so at a big shared event makes it easier for newer people
get involved - it brings people together, breaks down barriers and put
faces to names, whilst playing games, eating chocolate, sipping the odd
glass of water...
Communication generates communication and that vibe ripples out through
the group as a whole. Its actually been a fairly magical group to have
read and then participated in over the past ten years or so.
This was the reason why I initially suggested this event in 2002 and it
succeeded because loads of old and new afpers actually ran the event and
supported it.
You need to tell me - do you want this event or must I surrender the
room to a more organised group who are also asking?
please mail karen [at] lspace.org or cc any responses.
